Brightwater Students Make Valentine Treats for Hope Cancer Resources / Highlands Oncology
Group
In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, Brightwater Chef Aria Kagan's students are
coming up with creative ways to cater events safely. This semester's Events Catering
students have planned, prepared and packaged Valentine's Day treats for Hope Cancer Resources, a local nonprofit that provides support services to cancer patients living or being
treated in Northwest Arkansas.
Hope Cancer Resources partnered with Brightwater to create "thank you" dessert boxes
for their annual Hope for Heroes event. Hope for Heroes is Hope Cancer Resource's
way of showing appreciation for their staff at Highlands Oncology Group, with whom they frequently partner.
In early February, students planned and practiced their recipes, and days later, they
baked and packaged the treats for delivery on February 9th. The menu consisted of
heart-shaped brownies, raspberry-lemon cupcakes and apple turnovers drizzled with
a cinnamon cream.
Each semester, Brightwater Events Catering classes gain real-world experience planning
menus and prepping food for community events. Students not only learn cooking techniques,
but they have the opportunity to take their classroom culinary experiences and apply
them to real-life events. They develop problem-solving skills and work in teams to
pull off amazing culinary experiences throughout the community.
